Process mapping in logistics using SCOR

Process descriptions are and have been for a long time now essential for most companies to support their business operations. However, the process descriptions rarely follow any standards and for that reason can be difficult to use cross an organization and even more difficult between organizations. In this work the Supply Chain Council’s Supply Chain Operation Reference (SCOR) model have been used to describe the operations of a Logistics Service Provider (LSP) for the purpose of making a template of the business processes that can be used throughout the organization. The template is based on a single case study on value added services that are provided to a large Scandinavian textile retailer and includes storage, sorting, packaging of material in addition to distribution to the retailers´ stores. The case study results in a detailed description of all the activities included in the material flow as well as the associated information flow that is done to support the terminal activities. The identified activities have been mapped to the SCOR-model and the results from the mapping procedure are then used to build a template of services that the logistics operations are based on. The results the work implies that the SCOR model is an appropriate tool to describe the operations of an LSP and furthermore a good tool to identify potential improvements in the operations that would increase the efficiency of the LSPs operations.
