Today’s wind power plants are only compensated for their reactive power consumption at no-load. As the wind power plants grow bigger the amount of reactive power they need also increases. This is no longer a problem that can be ignored, especially as the net owners are beginning to charge the reactive power they transport. In this thesis a couple of different methods of compensation and their prices will be discussed and evaluated. Problems, such as self-excitation, that can occur if one fully compensates the wind power plant will also be brought to surface. The characteristics of the grid and the wind power plant itself will also be discussed. All the measurement presented in this thesis originally comes from a report written by Mr. Åke Larsson at the request of Elforsk [1]. The exception is the measurements presented in appendix A, which were done at the department of power engineering. The analysis contains some comments on the different methods of compensation and a rough estimation of the cost. The result shows that the dynamic consumption can be compensated in some different ways, some better than others. The dynamic compensation has to be fast due to the self-excitation phenomenon. Self-excitation may occur when the wind power plant is disconnected from the grid and its generator is fully compensated. The different methods of compensation differ both technically and in price, the faster the method of compensation is the higher the price is.
