Measuring resource efficiency in long haul road freight transport

Purpose of this paper The purpose of this paper is to present a methodology for measuring resource efficiency in road-based freight transport based on filling rate and resource utilisation of vehicles and load units for general cargo handled in a terminal network. The proposed methodology is based on comprehendible and easily accessible data. The use and usability of the methodology will therefore be shown in a case study. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a literature review of existing research within the area and a case study. A methodology has been developed to study the operations of transport service providers based on energy efficient movement of goods and vehicles as well as resource efficient terminal operations. The methodology was then used in a case study, collecting empirical data from three leading operators on the Scandinavian transport market Findings In the paper, suggestions are made on how to increase resource utilisation based on the provided methodology. By measuring volume, weight and load meters on outgoing load units, an estimation of resource utilisation can be made and a concrete value on the resource efficiency of a transportation network can be provided. The methodology makes a comparison between different transport operators and networks possible, which has been exemplified by a case study. Practical implications The methodology presented in the paper will enable transport service providers to get a figure on the potential improvements. Originality/value This paper combines empirical findings with existing theory. Based on this knowledge, the paper suggests actions to academia and the transportation industry.
