Using VMEA to Facilitate the Preparation of Robust Design Experimentation

In this paper, we investigate the possibility to facilitate the preparation of robust design experiments with the help of Variation Mode and Effect Analysis (VMEA). In the VMEA procedure, product characteristics important from a variation point of view are identified and assessed along with sources of variation affecting them. As a result, a variation risk priority number is calculated directing our attention to those areas that are most vulnerable to the sources of variation. As information about the sources of variation is valuable from a robust design point of view, the results of a VMEA can serve as a valuable input for preparing a robust design experiment. The variation risk priority numbers provide a means of prioritizing subsequent activities and thus focusing efforts to areas where they are most needed from a robust design standpoint.
