Mass spectrometric identification of aldonolactones as trimethylsilyl derivatives

Trimethylsilyl ethers of aldonolactones are useful for the identification of aldonic acids by mass spectrometry. Peaks recorded for the molecular ion (M) and for mass M-15 give a reliable determination of the molecular weight. Significant differences exist between 1,4- and 1,5-lactones. All diastereomers studied can be well distinguished from each other.

This introductory study was made on one of the first LKB instruments successfully connecting gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. It was located at the SIK Institute headed by professor von Sydow and it was operated by Klas Anjou.

The cooperation was initiated by professor Samuelson who was the supervisor and mentor of Göran Petersson from this start of his PhD studies. The mass spectrometric approach was applied and developed by Göran Petersson during ten following years of analytical research on sugars and hydroxy acids.
